Practical year – Department of Internal Medicine

Practical year in the Department of Internal Medicine

Teaching events

  • Full integration of PJ students (practical year students) into the running of the ward, i.e. you do not merely perform auxiliary tasks such as arranging appointments by telephone and taking blood samples; after an induction period you independently admit patients, record clinical findings, discuss further diagnostics and therapy with the ward physician, evaluate ECGs yourself and participate in all examinations and interventions for the patients on your ward, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, PTCD, ultrasonography, endosonography, ultrasound-guided radiofrequency thermal ablation, exercise ECG, echocardiography, TEE as well as long-term ECG and long-term blood pressure evaluation. Under supervision you learn to perform pleural punctures and ascites punctures. With PJ students who show above-average commitment, it does happen that they briefly look after parts of their ward on their own under the supervision of a Senior Physician. You also write the discharge reports for the patients in your care.
  • X-ray demonstration including demonstration of nuclear medicine findings, Monday to Friday from 15.30 – 16.00.
  • Departmental meeting with presentation by PJ students of cases they have examined themselves, Monday to Friday 08.00 - 08.20
  • Ward rounds for all PJ students of the department, alternating between different wards, with discussion of current cases by arrangement.
  • Weekly seminar, alternating with other clinics, discussing selected chapters of internal diseases (Wednesdays)
  • Participation in effusion cytology and bone marrow cytology diagnostics
  • Presentation and discussion of your own cases during Senior Physician and Chief Physician rounds, each once a week
  • Active participation in the junior doctors' training programme of the Department of Internal Medicine of the Evangelisches Diakoniekrankenhaus Freiburg, with Senior Physicians and specialists supervising the preparation of presentations
  • Participation in night shifts with compensatory time off
  • Work in the clinical laboratory, learning capillary blood sampling, the assessment of urine and blood smears, and an introduction to modern fully automated analytical technology and electronic data processing.
  • Participation in in-house continuing education events, with both internal and external speakers from the fields of internal medicine, surgery, anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine, gynaecology and obstetrics
  • Opportunity to take part in the weekly diabetes education courses (1-2 h/week)
  • In-house mortality and morbidity conference, with active participation encouraged
